In 2020 the UK went into several lockdowns due to the coronavirus, preventing people from seeing each other and changing their whole routines. People did not have to work anymore causing them to be at home, killing time. But with this enormous free time, a few people flourished in their creative ability.
Noor Al-Adnani is a young avid reader and writer who studied Psychology at Middlesex University and after did a master’s in forensic medical science at Queen Mary University. During lockdown and global uncertainty, Noor ventured into the literary world. “I’ve loved reading ever since I could pick up a book, it’s always been my dream to become a writer and being stuck at home seemed like the perfect time to pursue my dream.” Said Noor.
Not An Ordinary Day: A Short Story is a mystery and thriller book written by Noor Al-Adnani. The story follows Kyle, who woke up one morning to find his family murdered. Kyle knows who the killer is and needs to bring him to justice. However, his own freedom is at stake, because if he fails, he will be the one arrested for murder.
Noor described how she has always enjoyed thrilling stories about solving murders, she said: “The reason I did a master’s in forensic science is because I have always enjoyed the ‘gathering clues’ part a detective does. For example, my favourite movie is Se7en, and I love Agatha Christie’s books. Not An Ordinary Day is me opening the door to the genre and establishing myself as an actual writer.”
The book was more of an achievement for her, Noor did expect the book to not gather a lot of traction. She wanted to finally finish one of her writing projects and officially get it published.
“I’ve written quite a lot of books, but I actually struggle with self-criticism, all stories I write never see the light of day, in fact that’s why Not An Ordinary Day means so much to me. I had a lot of support from my family and without them I think this book would have stayed as just another word document.”
In terms of the future Noor wants to aim high, producing stories that transport readers into the books world as well as hoping to be a world-renowned author recognised for her literature. She is currently focusing on her second book which hopes to create a protagonist with the likes of Hercule Poirot, James Bond, and Sherlock Holmes.
“Currently I have a lot of free time which I have spent creating this character of mine. I want him to be perfect, his personality, characteristics, background story, all have to align to shape who he is.” Said Noor.
Noor Al-Adnani continues to pursue her dream of becoming a renowned author, writing stories that captivate and transport her readers. With her passion for crime fiction and determination to give life to unforgettable characters, book worms should be on the lookout for her future book releases.
