On Palm Sunday, as the faithful waved palms and sang hosannas at the Brazilian Catholic Chaplaincy in London’s Crystal Palace, I sat down with three parishioners—Cristina, Marcio, and Valdinar—to hear how Padre José Eduardo Viveiros Medeiros brings the spirit of Christ’s humble entry into Jerusalem to life every day. Their words paint a vivid picture of a priest whose open heart and guiding hand inspire a community far from home.
Padre José Eduardo Viveiros Medeiros is a Franciscan priest whose life story weaves together faith, service, and a deep commitment to community. Born on January 5, 1960, in Mosteiros, São Miguel Island, in the Azores, Portugal, his journey began at age 12 when he entered the Seminar Menor do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres in Ponta Delgada. At 14, he moved with his family to Fall River, Massachusetts, starting a new chapter in the United States.
José Eduardo graduated from B.M.C. Durfee High School at 17 and joined the U.S. Army, serving from 1977 to 1980, where he trained in ophthalmology and optometry. After his military service, he pursued philosophical studies at St. John’s Seminary in Brighton, Massachusetts, and later earned a Master’s degree in Theological Studies from the Washington Theological Union in Washington, D.C. Ordained on February 2, 1991, he has served diverse communities across the U.S., Portugal, Canada, and Brazil, bringing his multilingual gifts—fluent in Portuguese, English, Spanish, French, and semi-fluent in Italian—to every mission.
Since January 2020, Father José Eduardo has ministered at the Capelania Brasileira and St. Anne’s Parish in London, England. On Palm Sunday, his absence was felt, in Crystal Palace, despite Father Agaro’s mirroring Jesus’ humble service.
Three parishioners who know him well spoke out. Cristina Paula, 41, from the Brazilian Catholic Chaplaincy Our Lady of Aparecida in Crystal Palace, said, “every time I need something, he’s always there to listen and guide me. He’s ready for everything.” Her words echo the priest’s tireless support, much like Christ carrying the cross for others.
Marcio Angelo Rosa, a 45-year-old catechist, reflected on Father José Eduardo’s impact. “He inspires us because he lives the Church’s teachings and shows us how to follow Jesus,” Marcio said, his voice warm with admiration. “For me, he’s more than a father—he’s, my friend. I love Padre José Eduardo!” His enthusiasm recalls the joy of the Palm Sunday crowd, welcoming a leader who uplifts their faith.
Valdinar Lima Sousa, a 48-year-old carpenter and regular churchgoer says that “we have the privilege of having the best priests,” referring to Father José Eduardo and London. “Living here, with him, is a blessing.” His gratitude captures the spirit of a community that feels seen and cherished, much like those who laid palms before Jesus.
Father José Eduardo’s ministry reflects the humility and love of Palm Sunday. Through his listening ear, inspiring words, and friendly presence, he walks alongside his people, guiding them toward hope and faith, no matter where they are.
